DID
YOU KNOW?
The
SRSGDA executive committee meets on the second Tuesday of every month. If you have an issue to discuss, please
contact one of the officers so we can include you on the agenda. If you simply want to join us for a lively
discussion, please let us know as we move our location from month to month. Next month? August 12 at The Alehouse on 6th street in Moscow, 6
p.m.
Interested SRSGDA members may wish
to know that the Lewiston Gun Club has only 18 months remaining on their lease
at the current location. The future
location of the LGC is in the planning stages and the future is quite uncertain. For additional information regarding the
Lewiston Gun Club please contact them at 208-746-4938. The gun club is currently open on Saturday
and Sunday afternoons. Best wishes to
the oldest gun club in the United States.
The results
are in. If you didn’t attend the June 26th First Annual Poker Shoot
you just might want to mark your calendar for next year. You won’t want to miss this great event
again. Many thanks to Jay Roach for a
job well done on putting this shoot together.
The SRSGDA club had 12 shooters in attendance including Jay Roach, Mark
George, John ‘Doc’ Kramer, Bart and Monica Dearborn, Dan and Pam Spickler, Ed
Westbrook, Steve Huntington, Larry (Jay Roach’s pinch shooter), and Jim and
Mary McKinney. Conner Huntington was
unable to shoot as a result of some unfortunate orange plugs in the end of his
shotgun. He did however draw his own
hand of poker cards.
The event
attracted first time shooters who received top-notch instruction and shooting
pointers from “Coach” Roach. Both
Monica Dearborn and Pam Spickler shot well, managed to bust some clay, and will
be out shooting their husbands in no time at all…er, that should read…they will
be shooting better than their husbands in no time at all.
Shooters
participated in five different shooting games including an Annie Oakley Shoot,
Covey Flush, Quail Walk, Six Shoot, and Partner Shoot. These events were overseen by one of
Lewiston’s toughest residents. As
shooting commenced, a resident rooster pheasant that chooses as his permanent home the Lewiston Gun Club watched the action and paraded in
front of the shooters while the clays were breaking overhead. He never flushed, flinched or broke a
sweat. Now that is one tough bird.
“High Hand”
winner was John ‘Doc’ Kramer who won a one-year membership to the Lewiston Gun
Club – demonstrating his skill at drawing good cards. (So, how was his
shooting?) Jay Roach, with similar skills in card selection, picked the “Second
Place Hand” and won two braces at the next fun trial of his choosing within the
next year. Mark George was the third
place winner and won a brace at the next fun trial of his choosing within the
next year. Ian McKinney won a high card
standoff for the last of the GREEN SRSGDA hats.
Everyone
joined in on the fun as designated eaters at the lunch following the
shoot. The SRSDGA provided the burgers,
toppings and some salads and everything else came potluck. Thank you for all the great side dishes and
desserts.
During
the weekend of June 13th through the 15th Jon Hann of
Perfection Gun Dog Training Kennels presented a seminar on the training
techniques that he has developed over many years of experience and through
training thousands of dogs. The
training was held at Dry Hollow Ranch outside Pomeroy, WA. Owner and operator Vicki Maushak, who runs
the bird hunting reserve, was an excellent host and the meals she provided were
great as well.
All who attended benefited from
one-on-one and hands-on training with their dogs. The seminar was tailored to meet the needs of the
participants. Jon Hann and his
assistants did a great job meeting the training needs of all who attended. I felt that his techniques were right on the
money.
Prior to my attending the seminar,
Dick Chapman had told me that “Jon’s tape is the best training technique he has
seen so far… and I own a lot of tapes.”
If you ask any of the others who attended if this is true, you will
probably get the same answer from everyone.
Yes, Dick owns a lot of tapes.
Oh yeah, and Jon Hann’s techniques
are very good. There is nothing magical
about the Perfection Gun Dog technique.
It is based on the simple concepts of timing and good reinforcement. The sequence of the training builds on
itself and is a very humane training method that works.
So, what about those videos that
Dick mentioned? Can you get everything
you might need from the Perfection Gun Dog Training Kennel videos? Jon Hann holds nothing back in his seminars
and videos. It is all right there for
you to see and learn.
In person, it helps to have pointed
out (for some of us) a few of the subtler points of the training method. And just like the simple concepts, the
seminar provides opportunities to participate in a “teachable moment”, and reinforces the information in the videos.
The SRSGDA will be purchasing the
video series from Perfection Gun Dog Training Kennel once it is available on
DVD. The series will be part of the
video library owned by the SRSGDA and will be available for members to check
out.
During the weekend, many SRSGDA
members were found receiving an education from their dogs.
Dick Chapman may have learned the
most valuable lesson of all. Do not
make fun of another trainer for falling asleep and letting his dog chew up his
newly purchased check cord - or he might just sit next to you later in the day
and let his dog return the favor and chew up your new check cord.
If you missed the training, I am
sure that the members who attended would recommend attending the Perfection Gun
Dog Training when it is offered next year.
The seminar was a great learning experience for all who attended as well
as a good time of fellowship for those of us afflicted with the disease of
owning, training and hunting bird dogs.
